Systems Engineer

About Us

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?

At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.

Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.

Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.

We closed our Series A funding in 2023, so we're well funded and ready to grow. Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

We're also currently in stealth mode, so check out our website and we'll share more with you during the recruitment process 😁

The Role

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design and development of electrical systems with IOT capabilities, new IP blocks, and novel approaches to old problems. The successful candidate will work closely with our other engineers across various disciplines to derive and specify requirements, perform safety/security analyses, perform various engineering studies and help publishing our requirements and systems diagrams internally.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Product safety and reliability: Assist the systems team in performing various safety analysis, such as HARA (Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessment), FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) and calculating reliability metrics.
  • Product security: Assist in clarifying and communicating the security requirements of the embedded software and parameterisation tool to the respective design teams.
  • Product compliance: Work with our internal compliance engineer to derive and translate relevant compliance requirements to implement them into our requirements management system.
  • Requirements management: Continually improve the quality and functionality of our requirements management system. Assist in cross-functional alignment by recording instructional video's, create processes and communicate with the wider design teams.
  • Team work: Being a representative for the systems team during squad meetings
  • Verification support: Support the verification team in clarifying requirements and linking dependencies
  • Production/marketing support: Communicate product specifications and requirements for testing, packaging, labelling and documentation.

This role can be located in either Christchurch or Auckland.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have:

  • At least 2 years professional experience working in a design environment in a multi-disciplinary engineering role
  • Tertiary Qualified in Engineering, or equivalent
  • Broad experience in the electrical and electronics industry underpinning an ability to foresee and appreciate the impact of design decisions across electrical infrastructure, hardware, software, communications, safety & security.
  • Experience in robust design lifecycle and risk management approaches such as Hazard Analysis, FMEA, FTA
  • A natural curiosity for multi-domain engineering challenges, i.e. experience with robotics
  • Basic applied programming and scripting skills
  • The ability to read schematics and knowledge of PCB design
  • Some mechanical knowledge
  • High level of interpersonal and communication skills

Some nice to haves include:

  • Exposure to quality management work

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP)
  • A remote-first culture - work from home, come into the office, or a hybrid of both!
  • Great new headphones when you join
  • Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments
  • A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (ziplining, knife throwing, lawn games, what's next?)
  • Office dogs
  • Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise
  • Newly-refurbished offices in Auckland (by the beach) and Christchurch
  • The opportunity to learn and develop from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry!
