Junior Compliance Test Engineer

About Us

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?

At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.

Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.

Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.

Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

The Role

We’re looking to grow our testing team within our in-house compliance laboratory, known as Basis Compliance Lab (BCL). BCL is an ISO 17025-accredited facility for the testing of circuit breakers and related devices. We’re looking for a junior test engineer to expand our ability to deliver more compliance testing and faster to support our growing business needs.

You will be testing our first in-market circuit protection devices to demonstrate that the product meets regulated safety standards and is ready for end customers. This will require you to bring your attention to detail as you conduct numerous tests. This will range from fire testing on thermoplastics, to testing surge resistance at 6+ kV, to testing at currents above 500 A.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Preparation: Read international standards and internal procedures to develop an understanding of compliance test requirements.
  • Setup: Prepare precise test setups ready for review by senior test engineers. Document setup parameters.
  • Test execution: Conduct robust and diligent testing to specific test methods, suitable for an internationally certified test laboratory.
  • Report: Document testing using your high level of diligence. Participate in test result reviews and development of documentation sets. Communicate results to relevant stakeholders.
  • Continuous improvement: Participate in regular team retrospectives on how the lab’s scheduling, setup, methods, documentation, templates and reporting systems are functioning and ideate improved methods.
  • Develop New Methods: Work with the lab team and wider business support groups to establish new methods and the supporting infrastructure for them. Test them out, learn, iterate. Document the test methods and develop templates for efficiency.
  • Build Equipment: Learn from how our existing equipment works and ideate new and improved ways of testing. Aid design and development of new test fixtures.
  • Automate: Seek to discover opportunities where automation can improve lab efficiency. Work with the lab team and other team members to develop and test automation concepts and bring them to fruition.

BCL has big ambitions to become more automated and expand its scope. You’ll bring your diverse skill set to support the development of new test equipment and improve existing fixtures. This will range from the development of test scripts, to mechanical fixtures, and electrical systems. Your constant improvement mindset will assist in ensuring BCL can be a highly efficient and dependable compliance lab.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:

  • Prior experience in electrical testing is helpful, but not required.
  • Demonstrable ability to work safely in an electrical environment
  • Familiarity with electrical testing equipment such as programmable sources, electronics loads, thermal chambers, surge generators, oscilloscopes
  • Previous proven ability to work cross functionally between electrical, mechanical, and software. No need to be an expert in all areas!
  • Engineering degree preferred, but equivalent experience is acceptable
  • Attention to detail and the ability to learn quickly
  • An ability to take initiative, follow through on what you say you’ll do, and own your mistakes
  • Determination and tenacity, and ability to maintain a positive attitude in challenging situations

Some nice to haves include:

  • Experience working with electrical safety standards such as S/NZS 61009.1, AS/NZS 60898.1, AS/NZS 61439.3

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌

Benefits

  • Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments
