Failure Analysis Engineer

About Us

At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.

Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.

Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.

Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

The Role

Basis is about to launch our first products into the wild, and with that comes the inevitable challenge of unexpected surprises in the field. This is where our newly minted Failure Analysis Engineer will shine! You'll be the superhero for our customers on a never-ending quest to find bugs and continually improve our products. You'll be diagnosing faults through root cause analysis, conducting tests, and reporting your findings to leadership, design, and quality teams to ensure they know what is going on and can work with you on how to prevent future issues.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Lead Failure Investigations: Conduct in-depth examinations of failed field units to identify root causes using various diagnostic tools (e.g., test equipment, microscopy, non-destructive testing). You'll document findings thoroughly to ensure traceability and support safety incident investigations.
  • Develop Diagnostic Tools & Processes: Design and build essential test/diagnostic equipment and software. You'll also create and document robust processes to ensure high-quality, repeatable investigations.
  • Analysis & Reporting: Provide critical data analysis and trend reports to the Quality Lead for continuous improvement. You'll also review design changes to confirm the effectiveness of root cause resolutions.
  • Sample Management: Act as the primary contact for receiving failed units via RMA. You'll manage their storage, tracking in a database, and ensure proper disposal/recycling according to retention policies.
  • Contribute to Company Culture: Foster a diverse and inclusive environment, engage in continuous self-development, and actively contribute to company initiatives and events.

Make no mistake – Basis is a new company, so you won't have buckets of bureaucracy and rulebooks a mile thick to navigate. You will be in the driving seat of setting up our processes for how we deal with failures in the field, communicate those with the wider business, and be part of driving ongoing improvements, with the opportunity to grow your career in engineering quality.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits

  • Your Journey So Far: At least three years of hands-on experience in a similar role, or a position where you've mastered the foundational skills needed to shine here.
  • Electronics Enthusiast: You have some hands-on experience or familiarity with debugging and fault-finding electronics products – you're curious about how they tick!
  • High-Voltage Hero: You're comfortable and experienced working with 230V devices, products, or systems.
  • Tool-Savvy: You're comfortable and familiar with a range of lab equipment like microscopes, multimeters, oscilloscopes, and insulation testers, seeing them as essential companions for investigations.
  • Innovation Architect: You love to get your hands dirty creating and improving test jigs and diagnostic processes, making investigations smoother and smarter.
  • Sherlock Holmes Mentality: Utilising your systematic approach and a keen eye for detail, you're adept at noticing subtle clues and differences in fault symptoms without compromising evidence.
  • Cross-Functional Communicator: Communicating with others will be second nature to you! You're capable of seeking out the right people to learn from and are capable of working with technical experts to provide feedback and improve our design outcomes.
  • Documentation Dynamo: You consistently document your work to a high standard, ensuring crystal-clear clarity and traceability.
  • Organised & Proactive Powerhouse: You're highly organized, proactive in your approach, and masterfully manage tasks effectively.

Some nice to have's include:

  • Data Storyteller: You're brilliant at collecting, analysing, and presenting statistical data, trends, and metrics to turn failures into actionable insights.

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌
