Systems Engineer

About Us

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference in your next role?

At Basis, our purpose is to radically accelerate the clean-energy revolution - starting with smarter, safer, and more efficient homes. We’re focused on improving experiences for people through the application of technology, data, and a deep understanding of human behaviour.

Why? As a society, we need to decarbonise and accelerate the transition to alternative energy sources. Existing solutions are expensive and disparate, with limited functionality.

Basis is driven by purpose, real innovation, and ambition. We have a talented team spread across New Zealand, with a creative space by the beach in Takapuna, and a Design Lab in Christchurch where our physical products come to life.

Our team is smart, curious and has some big goals - so if you’re interested in joining a fast-growing and startup that is design-led and puts people at its core, then we’d love to hear from you!

The Role

We're on the cusp of launching our revolutionary product, featuring a groundbreaking user experience, novel IP, and complex integrated systems. But that's just the beginning and our team is growing as we turn our focus to new markets and opportunities. We're on the lookout for a passionate Systems Engineer to define the future of our product line.

In this integral role, you'll be at the heart of our systems team, ensuring our next-generation products are even more reliable, compliant, safe, and secure across multiple global markets. You'll be guiding the product from initial design through compliance and manufacturing, ensuring every detail is considered and achieved. This is not a role bound by buckets of bureaucracy, or with copy-paste-repeat processes - this is an opportunity to work on greenfields engineering work and make a real contribution to the future of our systems team.

Some of the things that you might be involved in include:

  • Define and Decompose Requirements: Establish, document, and clarify complex product and regulatory requirements.
  • Integrate Requirements: Consolidate functional, safety, security, and compliance requirements into a cohesive set.
  • Drive Systems Quality & Safety: Develop robust requirements for high-reliability systems and drive safety-critical approaches for hardware and software.
  • Be a Systems Knowledge Hub: Deeply understand user, system, and regulatory needs, becoming a go-to source for the team.
  • Shape System Architecture: Collaborate with hardware, software, and data architects to ideate and develop robust system designs.
  • Facilitate Design & Prototyping: Create clear system diagrams and assist with rapid prototyping to validate new concepts.
  • Contribute to a High-Performance Culture: Help foster growth within the systems team and enhance the company's ability to achieve objectives.

If you're a hands-on, multi-disciplinary problem-solver with a passion for systems engineering and thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment then read on as this could be your next opportunity!

Please note; This role is distinct from IT Systems Engineering where the role might involve keeping the IT systems up and running. Our position is related to engineering product development, so if you come from an IT background then feel free to email our talent advisor to check your suitability for the role. Please include a copy of your CV with that email.

About You

We think you’ll be a fit for this role if you have the following skills/or traits:

  • Engineering Background: A tertiary qualification in Engineering is preferred, alongside broad experience in the electrical and electronics industry.
  • Regulated Environments: Experience navigating complex regulated environments.
  • Robust Design Expertise: Familiarity with robust design lifecycle and risk management approaches (e.g., FMEA, Hazard Analysis,FTA, ETA, CCF Analysis and Software Safety Analysis).
  • Systems Thinking: The ability to understand and articulate the widespread impact of systems decisions across hardware, software, communications, safety, and security.
  • Cross-Disciplinary Communication: You can "speak the language" of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers and are adept at working cross-functionally between engineering departments.
  • Problem Solver: Skilled at breaking down ambiguous problems into clear, delegable tasks for engineering teams.

Some nice-to-have's include:

  • Experience working with Jira for requirements management

Research shows that while men apply for jobs when they meet ~ 60% of the job criteria, women and other marginalised groups tend to apply only when they check every box. So if you think you have what it takes, but are not sure you check every box, we still want to hear from you 🙌

Benefits

  • A competitive salary and employee share scheme (ESOP)
  • A hybrid-first culture - work from home or come into the office, it's totally up to you
  • Unlimited annual leave so that you can take the time that you need to re-energise
  • Tools of trade, including laptop and headphone allowance
  • Flexible hours - we focus on effort and outcomes, so adjust your hours around your children, hobbies, or other commitments
  • A schedule of fun team events throughout the year (ziplining, knife throwing, lawn games, what's next?)
  • Office dogs + steady supply of fresh fruit and snacks in the office
  • Access to Clearhead, our well-being programme which gives you 5x free sessions with a psychologist per year
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion: Pride Committee and partnering with Pride Pledge, DEIB Committee, EEO Policy and well-being strategy!
  • Parental leave policy that tops up wages to 100% for the primary caregiver for up to 22 weeks and up to 6 weeks for secondary caregivers (conditions apply)
  • The opportunity to learn and develop from some of the best and brightest minds in the industry!
