Intro to the role:

Your mission will be to attract, invest in, and support New Zealand’s most promising startups. You will actively source and connect with future founders, cultivate relationships with founders and startup team members, and build high-trust relationships with our co-investors and other investors in the ecosystem. You will support the team to simultaneously “sell” (craft and articulate our value prop to founders) and “buy” (perform high-quality due diligence and execute robust investment agreements). Most importantly, you will be a proactive, optimistic, collaborative, and kind team member that deeply aligns to our values and the success of our founders and investors.

About the Role:

Position Overview: We are seeking a thoughtful, dynamic, and values-aligned Investment Principal to join our team.

The successful candidate will play a critical role in identifying, evaluating, and managing investment partnerships with companies from first meeting through to IPO. They will be excited by the opportunity to contribute to the success of New Zealand’s most impactful entrepreneurs and businesses.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deal Sourcing and Evaluation:

    • Identify and source high-potential investment opportunities.

    • Conduct thorough due diligence including market research, financial analysis, and competitive assessment.

    • Develop investment theses and present opportunities to the Investment Committee.

  • Portfolio Management:

    • Provide strategic support and guidance to portfolio companies.

    • Monitor performance, track milestones, and identify areas for value creation.

    • Coordinate with the team to facilitate introductions between portfolio companies and relevant follow-on investors.

  • Relationship Building:

    • Build and maintain strong relationships with founders, investors, and industry leaders.

    • Represent Icehouse Ventures at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities.

    • Act as an advisor to and champion for early-stage startups.

  • Investment Strategy and Execution:

    • Collaborate with the wider team to execute Icehouse Ventures' investment strategy.

    • Participate in fundraising activities and investor relations efforts.

    • Contribute to the continuous improvement of our investment processes

  • Capital Raising

    • Participate in investor meetings and presentations to articulate fund strategy and portfolio performance.

    • Build relationships with potential Limited Partners.

Traits we anticipate will help you succeed in the role include:

  • A healthy dose of patience and impatience. The former to commit to long-term endeavours and the latter to catalyse action today.

  • An intense curiosity, humility, and hunger to learn.

  • Robust strategic thinking and reasoning skills.

  • An ability and desire to build high-trust relationships with investors and entrepreneurs.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation abilities.

  • A technical background and/or ‘first principles’ understanding of science, technology and engineering.

Prior experience that may be helpful:

Note: We do not expect any candidate to have all of the following experiences. We are also interested in alternative backgrounds that augment our current team and capabilities.

  • Advanced degrees or other professional development/ educational qualifications that demonstrate a growth mindset and commitment to lifelong learning.

  • Operational and Technical:

    • Prior roles in a venture-backed company, as a senior leader or founder.

    • Key activities: Hiring, sales, strategy, team leadership, product management, capital raising, commercialisation of IP, project delivery, scaling of core business functions, etc.

  • Finance and Investment:

    • Prior roles in venture capital, private equity, investment banking, or related-fields.

    • Key activities: capital raising, investment analysis, financial modelling.

    • A track record of identifying, evaluating, and executing successful investments.

  • General:

    • Understanding of the NZ startup ecosystem and entrepreneurial landscape.

    • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships over time.

Remuneration:

  • Base: $125-$175k*

  • Bonus: 10% of base subject to KPIs

  • Carry on future funds raised

  • ESOP in Icehouse Ventures
