Litmaps builds web-based visualisation and search tools for scientists and engineers. We believe science and engineering are our best bets for creating better outcomes for the world, so our mission is to accelerate progress towards scientific breakthroughs and new technologies. To do this we are building a modern research platform that’s intuitive, collaborative, and promotes the accessibility of knowledge.

Our product has attracted over 110,000 researchers across the world so far, but we’re just getting started. We require a mid-level front-end developer to help our incredible web-app grow.

What you’ll be working on

Our app is built from scratch in React, and you’ll get to know most of it! This is not your standard website — we have a dynamic and multifaceted product, including:

  • A real-time graph visualisation system, scratch-built on top of HTML5 Canvas
  • Client-side calculations that require performance considerations
  • A complex set of user journeys to consider
  • Detailed analytics

We have a bucket of awesome new features in the pipeline, and a long list of fixes to make. You’ll work closely with our product lead to integrate new features that are performant, beautiful, and just “feel right”.

There are a lot of aspects to the code, and we’ll introduce you to them gradually. We’ll guide you to becoming a critical part of our engineering team that we can trust to work independently.

Your experience

  • At least two years’ hands-on experience developing interactive web-apps in React
  • You’re well versed in JS/HTML/CSS patterns and best practises
  • You find it easier to build UI components and layouts from scratch than to import pre-made libraries
  • You’ve made a lot of mistakes, and can tell us about them
  • Preferred: experience in UI and UX design
  • Preferred: experience working with HTML5 Canvas

About us

We have a big vision for how we can help scientists help the world. We are a small and tight team, and we look out for each other’s wellbeing. We work on problems collaboratively. We deal with a lot of data. We are not afraid of tackling complex problems, even if it means having to learn something new. We care about data security. We care about our users. We have ice cream on Fridays, cake on birthdays, and pastries given absolutely any excuse.

Think you’d be a good fit for the role and for our team? Excited to use your skills to accelerate scientific progress?

If so, we’d love to hear from you — send us an email at [email protected] We don’t use any automated systems in screening and are not professional recruiters, so feel free to be candid and casual in your application. Please include a CV and cover letter (in PDF format) in your application telling us about awesome projects you’ve worked on and why you’d be a great fit for this role!

Note: At Litmaps we are always looking to hire the best talent and recognise that diversity in our experiences and backgrounds makes us stronger. We hire candidates of any race, colour, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital or family status, disability, and any other status. To reduce unconscious bias in our recruitment we will redact names, gender, age, and any other information which may prime us from your application prior to first pass consideration.
