About us
Marama Labs are on a mission to transform how the world understands and uses its liquid resources. We combine physics and data analytics to create novel solutions for industries such as global winemaking, life sciences and biofermentation. Our (patented) CloudSpec hardware is a world-first spectroscopy technology, invented by our founders, that enables rapid chemical analysis of highly complex liquid samples. Coupled with our cloud-software platform, CloudSpec helps our clients monitor, control and optimise the quality of their complex liquid products. .
Science doesn’t just happen in a lab, done by people in lab coats. There is lots of that, but to transmute lab science into real world solutions, you need savvy engineers, data scientists, designers, sales people and a wealth of other skills.
Marama Labs are a team of creative problem-solvers from different backgrounds, who pool their skills to build our products and solve really tough problems for customers.
Having recently closed an over-subscribed capital raise backed by investors from Ireland, New Zealand and Australia, our team is now growing rapidly to meet the opportunities ahead of us. Scaling up our hardware production capacity in Wellington is crucial to the next step in our global journey — which is where you come in!
The Role
We are looking for an experienced engineer to lead our hardware team in Wellington in scaling up the manufacture of our CloudSpec devices. You will be owning, designing and steering the company’s manufacturing processes, as well as supporting the transition of new product lines from R&D into production. Ideally you will have a wealth of experience in the design, prototyping, testing and manufacture of products from your previous role(s).
As senior engineer you will be a great communicator and mentor, lead by example, and strive to implement best practices (e.g. 6S). Your responsibilities will cover a broad range from material requirements planning, supply chain management, to final product QA and product delivery. Clear planning and communication of deliverability is a must. You will be reporting directly to the executive team and working closely with the sales team to ensure product delivery timeframes are continuously met. You will also work intimately with our science and product development team, supporting their R&D activities as time permits in between production cycles.
Your daily work and responsibilities will include managing your team, liaising with suppliers, planning of manufacture processes and unit availability, assembling and testing instruments, establishing and following QA/QC best practices, designing and prototyping components (both in-house or outsourced), and improving the company’s general engineering capability.
Marama Labs is a deep-tech company with lots of ambition—there will be challenges, opportunities, and, no doubt, lots of small and large problems to solve and to learn from. In this you should rest assured in having the full support of a smart, fun, and generally fantastic crew around you on that journey.
Why Apply?
This is an opportunity to apply your technical development and management experience to the fascinating world of optical instrumentation (and perhaps beyond) and to take on an important role in the technical direction of a fast-growing science startup.
We are an open-minded group of people of diverse viewpoints and identities, focused on outcomes rather than rigid work structures. We will value who you are and welcome the unique combination of skills that you bring.
We make product and technical decisions in a collaborative environment. As a senior engineer you have real power to influence product direction and manufacturing choices.
We believe in empowerment to become your best self and will support your continuing growth. More concretely we are offering the following benefits on top of a competitive salary:
$1000 per year towards professional development, work-related hobbies, conferences or courses.
Employee share option pool
1 paid volunteer day per quarter
Flexible working hours
While the nature of this role requires your physical presence on our premises, we are a remote-friendly environment and support this where and when suitable.
You will be working on an innovative new project that will make a big difference to global industries such as winemaking and biopharma production, with many potential applications in other areas.
Your Experience
Experience or ability with the following are necessary to be successful in this role:
You ideally have had 3+ years industry experience as a lead technical engineer in a startup environment.
Worked with, managed and mentored junior engineers and you love it.
Effective and open teamwork and communication, with confidence and self-awareness.
Proven track record of project managing product development or production & release.
Budget management, financial planning and production cost estimation.
Best practices (6S, KAIZEN).
5+ years practical experience in mechanical engineering.
Global supply chain management and inventory management expertise.
CAD/CAM experience (e.g. Fusion360, Solidworks).
Experience with modern manufacturing and rapid prototyping processes, e.g. 3d-printing and CNC milling, injection and over-moulding.
If you have relevant expertise from a more junior role and are looking forward to taking the next step, this might be the perfect opportunity for you.
Experience with electronics, mechatronics, and industrial instrumentation will be advantageous, as would be some hands-on experience with optical systems. Please tell us about your own particular areas of technical experience or knowledge; everyone has a unique set of useful skills!
