About Number 8 Bio

Number 8 Bio is a venture-capital-backed start-up on a path to making a significant climate impact. We collaborate with farmers to enhance agricultural sustainability while boosting productivity. Our first products are innovative feed additives designed to eliminate methane emissions from the world's 2.6 billion cattle and sheep.

Methane, a greenhouse gas responsible for approximately ~30% of climate change, is more potent and shorter-lived than carbon dioxide. Eliminating man-made methane emissions is one of the fastest ways to combat climate change and ensure a sustainable future.

Based at Macquarie University in Sydney, we are a team of passionate innovators in climate science and technology. We offer a dynamic, intellectual environment, flexible work hours, and the opportunity to make a real difference.

About the role

We’re looking for a hands-on, experienced Formulation Scientist with expertise in sustained-release systems, materials, or bolus/tablet technologies.

You will lead and support projects to deliver bolus products that perform consistently and predictably in vitro. This role sits at the intersection of formulation science, materials engineering, and product development - perfect for someone who loves building physical products, iterating quickly, and solving hard technical problems.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with our Science & Engineering team to develop and improve our sustained-release bolus products

  • Identify suitable materials and compositions; produce and test lab prototypes.

  • Prepare lab and pilot-scale batches and support in-vivo tests to evaluate performance and suitability for scale-up.

  • Analyse data and communicate insights to guide formulation decisions.

  • Convert lab formulations into scalable production processes.

  • Support early manufacturing runs, QC methods, and raw-material procurement.

  • Prepare clear technical reports, documentation, and SOPs.

  • Generate data to support regulatory submissions and patent filings.

Minimum Requirements

  • A degree in Science (Applied/Industrial Chemistry, Materials Science, Pharmaceutical Science, Chemical Engineering or similar preferred) or strong, relevant industry experience.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in formulation and new product development (pharmaceutical, veterinary or similar sectors).

  • Strong knowledge of chemistry principles, material behaviour in formulations (minerals, polymers, excipients).

  • Experience with lab testing, data analysis, and structured experimentation.

  • Strong communication and ability to work across disciplines.

  • Physically capable of hands-on prototyping and mechanical/dissolution testing.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience with sustained-release systems (bolus/tablets/capsules)

  • Hands-on experience with dissolution, erosion, mechanical and stability testing

  • Experience in regulated labs or manufacturing environments

  • Familiarity with APVMA requirements

  • 0 → 1 product development or scale-up experience

  • Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to iterate quickly

  • Interest in sustainability, agriculture, and climate technologies

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a passionate team of innovators dedicated to combating climate change as we grow to commercial scale

  • Engage in meaningful work with significant global impact

  • We offer competitive remuneration and employee share options

  • Enjoy a flexible and dynamic work environment within a great team

Join us at Number 8 Bio and contribute to groundbreaking work in climate technology and sustainable agriculture. Apply now to be part of a team making a real impact.

Number 8 Bio is an equal opportunity employer.
