Job Description

The successful candidate will join OpenStar’s Magnets team. OpenStar designs and builds specialised high-temperature superconducting magnets with embedded subsystems to contain a fusion plasma.

OpenStar is constantly researching and developing aspects of both the magnets and subsystems. The candidate will be involved in research and development, upgrading both the software and hardware of existing experiments and creating test-jigs, and conducting experiments as we iterate towards our ultimate goal of a working fusion power generator.

Depending on the stage of the project, the day-to-day will involve some hands-on programming of data processing software, instrumentation equipment, testing and handling of HTS materials and magnets and working around hot plates (up to 200 degrees) as well as cold temperatures (liquid nitrogen).

Both creativity and execution are needed for success in this role.

Responsibilities

Your responsibilities will be split into three main areas:

  • Develop new models by interpreting experimental results
  • Assist with the design and manufacture of new testing components
  • Document their findings in regular meetings and technical reports

Requirements

Must have

Applicants must have completed at least their 3rd year of study in an undergraduate programme in any one of the following disciplines: mechatronics engineering or electronics engineering.

Applicants must have basic programming experience, and exposure to either experimental or engineering work environments.

Nice to have

PLC programming, sensor integration (laser measurement, temperature measurement, etc.), Matlab/Python/Rust programming skills. HTS materials experience.

Employment Details

Employment Type: Fixed-term internship.

Compensation:

  • $27.80 per hour - 400 hours.
  • 3% employer kiwisaver contributions.
  • 8% pay-as-you-go holiday pay.

Location: This internship must be undertaken at OpenStar Technologies' facilities in Ngauranga, Wellington, New Zealand. Candidates must be able to work on-site to fully engage with our team and technology.
