Job Description

The candidate would join OpenStar’s operations team working alongside docking and/or vacuum systems. Our systems are subject to mechanical, structural, and thermal engineering constraints. The candidate will be developing systems that integrate with a range of other crucial components of our levitated dipole fusion reactor.

Responsibilities

Mechanical Design

The candidate will be generating design concepts, developing mechanical parts and assembly systems and verifying those systems.

Prototype Preparation

The candidate will source materials, design for manufacture/fabrication and create procedures for the design assemblies.

Prototype Testing

The candidate will then test their designs experimentally and qualify aspects of performance.

Cryogenic Testing

Subject to availability, the candidate may also be asked to assist with various cryogenic engineering experiments necessary to facilitate the cryogenic systems at OpenStar.

Requirements

Must have - Applicants must have completed at least their 3rd year of an undergraduate mechanical or mechatronics engineering degree.

Applicants must have experience with 3D-CAD modelling, an understanding of mechanical stress/strain, and an understanding of electrical concepts.

Nice to have - Experience with thermal expansion/contraction, FEA experience (ansys/comsol). Practical experience with mechanical systems.

Employment Details

Employment Type: Fixed-term internship.

Compensation:.

  • $27.80 per hour - 400 hours.
  • 3% employer kiwisaver contributions.
  • 8% pay-as-you-go holiday pay.

Location: This internship must be undertaken at OpenStar Technologies' facilities in Ngauranga, Wellington, New Zealand. Candidates must be able to work on-site to fully engage with our team and technology.
