Job Description
Soldering is the backbone of the magnet technology developed by OpenStar. To date, OpenStar has advanced the soldering process to create joints with low resistance and high thermal conductivity. We have a robust process in place but there is an ongoing demand to continue to improve our joints.

The successful candidate will need to develop an understanding of the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of solder materials, as well as the behaviour of fluxes and influence of other variables during the soldering process.

The role will involve working with the magnet team to research and identify and carry out cryogenic tests to verify joint technology.

Responsibilities

The candidate will:

● Undertake literature reviews

● Assist in designing experiments to test different solder and flux combinations for various applications.

● Perform laboratory experiments, including the preparation of samples, application of fluxes, and soldering processes.

● Data Analysis, documentation and reporting

● Collaboration - working closely with other team members for both sharing the resources and transfer of knowledge while ensuring project goals and timelines are met.

● Safety Compliance: Follow all laboratory safety protocols and ensure a clean and organised work environment (includes working with both high (>200 C) and low (<-200 C) temperatures).

Requirements

Must have

Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Basic understanding of materials science principles, particularly as they apply to solders and fluxes.
