Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. The terms of our culture should not be set by gate-keeping legacy media or chaos-fueling social media, but by the people who make and participate in that culture. Substack’s model, based on direct subscriptions, has fueled an explosion of independent publishing. It empowers creators with economic autonomy, creative ownership, and a direct connection to their most engaged audiences.

We're looking for a scrappy technical talent to join our Market Intelligence team. You'll build the internal OS powering apps that help Substack understand our market position and execute on our go-to-market motion. This is a unique hybrid “full stack product builder” role, at the intersection of data, web development, marketing, and growth.

You'll work closely with leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to translate ambiguous business needs into production-ready software, often inventing solutions that go beyond what anyone knew to ask for.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the internal operating system that provides a real time view of the network, both on Substack and off-platform

  • Design and implement data pipelines that synthesize information from diverse sources, including hard-to-find public data into actionable intelligence

  • Work with large network datasets on clustering analysis, market mapping, and audience segmentation

  • Partner with internal stakeholders to understand their underlying needs, then build tools that exceed their expectations

  • Ship code every day, while maintaining high standards for quality and legibility

Requirements

  • 4+ years of experience in software engineering, data engineering, or a related technical role

  • Proficiency in SQL and modern data tools (Snowflake, Airflow, etc.)

  • Full-stack web development skills (TypeScript, React, Node.js)

  • Proven ability to use LLMs as a force multiplier in your development workflow. You should be fluent in building software with AI and well-versed enough to understand its limitations

  • Sound engineering fundamentals: you can write robust, non-buggy, legible, and scalable code, even when heavily LLM-assisted

  • Experience working with large datasets for network products, familiarity with graph analysis, clustering algorithms, and market segmentation

  • Experience with data acquisition from public sources (web scraping, API integration, data enrichment)

  • Hacker mindset: you get creative to solve hard problems and aren't blocked by ambiguity

  • Strong product sense: You understand what people actually need, not just what they ask for

  • Independent and autonomous; comfortable owning projects end-to-end with minimal direction

This position will ideally be located in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the majority of the product and leadership team are based. Substack’s compensation package includes a market competitive salary, equity for all full time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $150,000 - $210,000. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise and may vary from the amounts listed above.

Substack is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, national origin, veteran or disability status. We’re seeking people passionate about enabling independent expression and building a better business model for creators. If you want to see what media, communities, and content can become when unmoored from advertising models, and you have the skills and experience to contribute, we’d love to meet you.
