Software Engineering Intern

Location: Auckland, NZ
Reports to: Head of Engineering

About Watchful

Watchful is building the next generation of security intelligence. We unify hardware, software, and guard staffing into one platform, helping monitoring centers protect people and property without the usual headaches of false alarms, endless alerts, and clunky systems. Our stack spans AI, computer vision, real-time pipelines, and modern web apps, and we move fast.

The Role

This is not a coffee-fetching or corporate throwaway code internship. As a Watchful intern, you’ll ship real code into production that supports live security operations. You’ll work alongside engineers and designers to build features, fix bugs, and learn how to deliver reliable software in a real-world environment.
You’ll get exposure to:
Building full-stack features with TypeScript, React, and C#.
Working with APIs, integrations, and real-time event pipeline.
Deploying to Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud environments. We use a mix of GCP, AWS, and CloudFlare
Writing code that gets used by monitoring agents, security companies, and property managers — not just in a sandbox.

Responsibilities

Write code. Get better at writing code.
See work through from idea → PR → deployment → iteration, making an impact on the real world.
Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teammates.

Requirements

Projects where you shipped something people actually used (Work from hackathons, side projects, open source are welcome).
Strong fundamentals working in modern programming languages and frameworks.
Familiarity with web development (React or similar frameworks is a plus).
Curiosity about security, monitoring, AI, or systems that operate in the real world.
Comfortable debugging, asking questions, and iterating quickly.

Nice to Have

Experience with Docker, cloud deployments, or distributed systems.
Interest in AI/ML and computer vision.

What You’ll Gain

Hands-on mentorship from engineers who ship to production daily.
A crash course in building and maintaining real-world systems.
A chance to shape features that literally help protect people and property.
An inside look at what it’s like working at an early-stage security/AI company.

How to Apply

Send your CV to [email protected]. No cover letter essay. Just show us what you’ve built.
