Hardware Engineer - Ground-Up Development
Wellumio
Location: Hutt Valley, Wellington
Employment Type: Permanent, Full Time
Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: $105,000-$115,000 + Benefits
The Company
MAS Zengrange (NZ) Limited (MASZ) designs and manufactures sophisticated, high-quality electronic engineering products for international clients and is proudly based in Wellington. Our team thrives on innovation, precision, and delivering world-class solutions.
The Role
We are looking for a Hardware Design Engineer who thrives on starting with requirements and creating complete solutions from the ground up. This role is not about configuring or reusing existing reference designs — we need someone who can architect, design, and deliver original hardware platforms from first principles.
You will be working on analogue interfaces, custom power supply circuits, and microcontroller systems, with a strong emphasis on battery-powered devices. Some experience in RF design is an advantage. You’ll take ownership across the full development cycle, from schematic to prototype validation, working as part of a structured and collaborative engineering team.
Your day-to-day work will include:
Taking a set of requirements and translating them into a complete hardware architecture, without relying on pre-packaged designs.
Developing circuits at component level — analogue, digital, and power systems — from concept through to validated design.
Designing and validating custom SMPS and power supply circuits tailored to unique applications.
Selecting and integrating microcontrollers (STM32/ARM) into bespoke systems.
Applying disciplined design practices to ensure compliance and performance.
Taking designs through schematic capture, PCB layout (Altium), prototype bring-up, and verification.
Collaborating with colleagues to refine designs, improve processes, and ensure products can be reliably manufactured.
Skills and Experience
We are seeking someone with:
8+ years hands-on hardware design experience, with depth in one or more of the following:
- Battery power & SMPS
- RF circuits
- Safety-critical energy/firing circuits
Demonstrated system-level design and architecture ownership, end-to-end.
Strong EMC/E3 grounding (shielding, filtering, zoning, stack-up) and mixed-signal layout best practices.
Proven design-for-ruggedisation experience.
Proficiency in Altium PCB CAD and confidence with oscilloscopes, power analysers, VNAs, and spectrum/network analysers.
Ability to pass required security checks.
Nice to have:
Functional safety product experience or adjacent safety-critical systems.
Familiarity with IEC 61508 process and safety-case development.
Exposure to common defence standards for planning/qualification.
Key Technical Focus Areas
ARM processor integration (STM32/ARM Cortex)
SMPS design (from scratch, not just integration)
Analogue circuit design (original development)
Power supply design and validation
RF design (advantageous)
PCB CAD and Altium
