You'll join our Technical Advisory team within Operations, a centre of expertise that provides high‑quality technical advice, supports the inspectorate, and strengthens WorkSafe's ability to influence safe practices across New Zealand.
The team is highly collaborative and values empathy, thoughtful decision‑making, collegial support, and knowledge sharing.
About the role / Ō te tūranga
As a Technical Specialist Engineer, with demonstrable and deep technical expertise in industrial plant and equipment, as well as pipelines and pressure piping, you'll bring your domain expertise to help shape safer workplaces throughout Aotearoa. You'll be a trusted advisor, supporting inspectors, informing regulatory decisions, and providing technical insights that directly influence real‑world health and safety outcomes.
This is a role where your voice matters, your experience is valued, and your impact is visible. You'll have opportunities to coach and mentor others, contribute to critical safety programmes, and stay connected to emerging technical trends. It's meaningful, people‑centred work with genuine purpose.
What You'll Do/ Ko tōu ake mahi
- Provide high‑quality, timely technical advice across WorkSafe and to stakeholders
- Support effective regulatory decision‑making, including permitting advice
- Maintain up‑to‑date specialist knowledge to ensure safe practice
- Lead and contribute to technical programmes aligned with strategic priorities
- Translate complex technical concepts into clear, accessible guidance
- Coach and mentor kaimahi to build technical capability
- Participate in workplace assessments and contribute to investigations
- Communicate recommendations clearly to a range of audiences
- Build strong internal and external networks to understand industry trends
What You'll Bring / Ko ngā pukenga ōu
- Strong specialist knowledge in your engineering discipline
- The ability to apply technical expertise in a regulatory or safety‑focused environment
- A collaborative, people‑centred approach with excellent communication skills
- Confidence translating technical information into clear, practical language
- Experience building trusted relationships across diverse groups
- Curiosity, empathy, and a desire to contribute to safer workplaces
- Qualifications (or equivalent experience):
- Relevant tertiary qualification in your technical specialty
- Ability to obtain chartered status or machinery inspector appointment (if required)

Salary range / Awhe utu
As part of our remuneration framework the full salary range for the position is from $120,551 to $158,328, and our expected starting base salary for the right person is from $120,551 to $133,143. Note: KiwiSaver/SSRSS employer contribution is additional to/on top of your base salary. From 1 April 2026 our KiwiSaver employer contribution will rise to 3.5%.
