Rārangi Utu ā-Mātauranga - Education Payroll is a Crown entity that delivers pay to schools and kura on behalf of the Ministry of Education. With around 200 employees, we deliver one of the largest and most complex payrolls in Australasia.
The combination of great people and cutting-edge technology enable us to pay around 102,000 teachers and support staff across around 2,500 schools accurately and on time every fortnight. That’s approximately $294 million a fortnight and $7.7 billion per annum.
Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
We are looking for a Platform Engineer to help design, build and run Education Payroll’s platform-as-a-service capability. You’ll work across internal and external technical teams to keep our platforms secure, reliable and automated, and you’ll play a hands-on role in delivering improvements, upgrades and incident resolution.
If successful, you’ll be appointed between $108,000 to $162,000 depending on experience and capability.
Because of the highly collaborative nature of our work, Education Payroll is primarily an office-based workplace. Our office is in central Wellington, close to the train station for an easy commute. We do offer flexible working arrangements after our people have completed an initial training period.
Key accountabilities:
You will be responsible for:
designing, building and maintaining scalable platform infrastructure using an infrastructure-as-code approach (OpenTofu/Terraform) and Git-based workflows
operating and continuously improving our OpenShift container platform, including cluster upgrades, patching, troubleshooting and platform automation
enabling reliable delivery by supporting and evolving CI/CD pipelines (Tekton/OpenShift Pipelines, Jenkins) and GitOps workflows (Argo CD/OpenShift GitOps)
supporting secure, standardised platform operations including policy-as-code (OpenShift ACM policies), operators, service mesh and secrets management (HashiCorp Vault), and provide after-hours on-call support on a rostered basis.
Kōrero mōu - About you
We're looking for someone with the following skills and attributes:
a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or equivalent practical experience
strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work across teams with different technical backgrounds
hands-on experience with container platforms and Kubernetes technologies, ideally OpenShift, including day-2 operations (upgrades, patching and troubleshooting)
experience implementing GitOps and deployment automation using Argo CD/OpenShift GitOps, Helm and Kustomize
CI/CD experience with Tekton/OpenShift Pipelines and/or Jenkins, and a strong understanding of continuous delivery practices
strong infrastructure-as-code capability (OpenTofu/Terraform) and version control skills (Git), plus experience with security tooling and practices such as secrets management (HashiCorp Vault)
experience with OpenShift ecosystem capabilities such as Operators, ACM policies, Red Hat Service Mesh and MetalLB (or comparable technologies)
solid Unix/Linux skills and a practical, analytical approach to troubleshooting and problem solving
a learning mindset and the ability to adapt to new technologies, while contributing to DevOps practices and Agile ways of working
